Inclusion Works

An inclusive setting is one that integrates children with disabilities with their typically developing peers. In an inclusion program, children with disabilities model after their typically developing classmates. Typically developing children motivate their classmates and strengthen their own skills by mentoring their peers. In addition, by learning to accept differences in people, a more empathetic and kind child will emerge.

Inclusion provides a much wider variety of experiences than in a segregated special education classroom. Overall, inclusion builds self-esteem, improves attitude toward school and strengthens socialization and academic skills.
